The S.A.T. Sketch

The purpose of an “S.A.T.” (Stop and Think) sketch is to help you locate (and solve) potential problems before they confront you on your finished painting. For example, an S.A.T. sketch will force you to consider what you might do with the background before it jumps up to haunt you! My S.A.T. sketches are usually small (3” × 5” [8cm × 13cm]) pencil sketches.
